UK Young Artists are delighted to announce the 13 artists and art collectives selected by a prestigious panel, who will now go on to represent the UK at the next International Young Artists Biennale in Morocco next year.

The panel, which included renowned performance artist Akram Khan and international artist Mariele Neudecker as well as representatives from university partners and Arts Council England, studied the 48 exhibiting works with the difficult task of deciding who would be put forward to represent the UK.

The successful artists are:

Mariele Neudecker said “I am very pleased to be involved in such an exciting and ambitious project. What a good idea to encourage such a broad spectrum of art forms to be hosted in such a compact situation. With a very strong group of projects in this first event, UKYA has great potential for the future. The sense of the participating artists being inspired and stimulated was tangible and overwhelming.”

Akram Khan said: 'I was so impressed by the young talent that is residing in England. What is most promising is that there is a new kind of collective and yet individual voice that is emerging through the young artists of today. I was extremely glad to be part of selecting the young artists that we have chosen to go forward. By being part of this programme I feel we were all learning from each other, and about each other's craft. I cannot reiterate enough the great importance to continue and embrace art in this way.'

The selection, which took place on Sunday 24 October in Déda, marked the end of UKYA01, a four day festival celebrating young artists and their work from all across the UK, and forming the first national event hosted by UK Young Artists. UKYA01 took place at numerous cultural venues throughout Derby and was also successful in achieving the much sought after Olympic Inspire Mark, increasing the number of Inspire Mark projects in the region to 100.

Rebecca Blackman, Senior Manager, Corporate Planning at Arts Council England, said 'It's fabulous to welcome young artists to Derby and indeed the region; it's a great opportunity to place the East Midlands on the national map.'
