Rosie Pickles
Rosie Pickles is a visual artist whose work in paper moves between drawing and sculpture.
For the Biennale, Rosie, who is fascinated by travel, is presenting a collection of maps depicting a selection of the places artists have travelled from to take part in the event.
'I have simplified each place to their organic shape. Without any of the usual map markings they become almost abstract,' explains Rosie.
'They are different from each other and yet unified in this way. They have a poetic feel, a magical quality; they are serene and ethereal, minimal and yet elaborate.
'I'm fascinated by paper both as a structural medium and as a symbol of life and society. Every activity in life uses paper to mark the occasion or provide a record. It can be used to represent or document a particular place or society at a specific time.'
