Samuel Hadfield

Sam describes himself as an ‘extrospective image maker’ whose interest is exploration. He makes images of the built environment because he finds it the most diverse and compelling subject.
Sam studied Photography at the University of Derby, graduating with a 2:1 in 2008. Now based in Manchester, he is continuing to work as an artist while pursuing a career as a commercial photographer.
The photographs that he is taking to the Biennale come from a series of work entitled ‘re-creation’ that he first exhibited as part of the Format International Photography Festival held in Derby in Spring 2009.
'Re-creation' explores artificial environments used for leisure. Although these images appear ’empty’, on closer inspection human traces are scattered throughout, disguised amongst scenes of banality, vacancy and peculiarity.
Sam plans to get to as many workshops as he can at the Biennale, including ‘Public Invasion’, a workshop based around pubic art.
He says: “I hope to attain a stronger idea of my future plans and practice whilst in Skopje, through meeting fellow artists and seeing new works from across Europe.”
