Marianna Simnett

Marianna has made a piece specifically for the Biennale. “Waterways is a dual screen projection in which water destroys and liberates, fills and empties. At the hub of Waterways is the formation of territory and ownership of space. Water has the power to dissolve these boundaries, with its need to seep into gaps and flood spaces; and conversely, to drain habitats and break structure”.
For ‘Seven Gates’ Marianna was particularly interested in the way the gate is associated with free entrance and ongoing circulation. Her work is a response to the idea of ‘free entrance’ and the victimization of people within their own territories.
She says: “I am thrilled to have been selected and very proud of the event as a whole. Having Eastern European roots, I am particularly excited to visit Macedonia and meet other artists from all over Europe.”
