Gareth Sprey

At the Biennale, Gareth will exhibit Sonic Graffiti, a semi-interactive sound installation that includes customized props. He explains: “When a graffiti artist plans his next piece, he’ll find the right space with contours and shapes to fit his design around. I’m doing the same but with sound, focusing on the sonic contours encoded in a specific space. For example, a playground to many people means screaming children and lots of noise. Instead of spray paint I work with sound to create complementary or subversive pieces that play into the space on specially modified radios and tape players. Sonic Graffiti is a documentation of this idea, using recordings, the modified players and some interactive software.”
On being selected to represent the UK at the Biennale, he says: “I was excited and surprised! I’m looking forward to meeting international peers and exploring the art of all the countries involved. Plus eating as much of the ‘gastronomic art’ as possible!”
